Coriander is also known as cilantro; so, the two words are interchangeable for some people. However, as a spice, it is the seeds in the cilantro plant that are called coriander. Both the fresh green leaves and the seeds in this plant are used in cooking. However, they have different flavors and uses; so, you can’t substitute one for the other. Coriander seeds are used as a spice in many Middle Eastern dishes. It can be used as whole or ground. Also, it is recommended to grind the seeds at home and only when needed because they lose their fresh flavor fast. (More info.)
