Molokhiyah is a type of soup that is made from Jute plant leaves. You can buy the leaves either fresh or frozen. The frozen leaves are already minced. However, the fresh leaves needs to be washed, cut from the stem, and then minced. Molokhiyah is green in color and can be cooked with chicken or meat. People usually serve Molokhiyah with white rice and squeeze some lemon on it.




  • 1 bag of frozen Jute plant, minced
  • 2 chicken breasts cut into small cubes
  • ½ white onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 tbsp. minced garlic
  • 4 tbsp. Mazola oil
  • 3 cups water
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1/3 tsp black pepper


  1. Thaw the frozen jute plant.
  2. Sautee onion in 2 tbsp. of Mazola oil.
  3. Add chicken, tomatoes, 1 cup of water, salt and spices. Stir for 5 minutes on high heat.
  4. Cover the pot and let it cook on medium heat for 20 minutes.
  5. Add the Jute plant and 2 cups of water.
  6. Let it cook for 5 minutes.
  7. In a skillet, sautee garlic in the remaining oil, stir until garlic is light brown.
  8. Pour the garlic on the Molokhiyah and let it cook for 2 more minutes.
