Shafoot is a very popular Yemeni dish. It is one of the dishes that people make mainly during the month of Ramadan. It is made from Lahooh and mint buttermilk. Lahooh is a type of bread that you can buy from some international stores that carry Yemeni or Ethiopian breads; or, you can make it yourself – as we are going to do here. There a number of ways to make Lahooh, some of which will depend on the ingredients available. In this recipe, I will make Lahooh in a simple way to keep its authentic Yemeni taste, using ingredients we can find in a many US grocery stores. To make the Lahooh, I combined one cup of pancake mix with 1 tsp of baking powder, ½ tsp of salt, 1 cup of water, and 1 tsp of black seeds.
The Lahooh mixture is thinner than regular pancake batter. I heated a skillet and poured a thin layer of the Lahooh mixture into the skillet. I didn’t flip the Lahooh, but heated it from only one side


I put 3-4 Lahooh on a plate then pour the buttermilk on it.



  • For Lahooh:
    • 1 cup pancake mix
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 tsp black seeds
    • ½ tsp salt
    • 1 tsp baking powder
  • For mint buttermilk:
    • 2 ¼ cup buttermilk
    • ½ cup mint
    • 2 green onions (the green part only), chopped
    • cup cilantro
    • 1 clove garlic
    • 1 tsp cumin
    • ½ salt
    • ½ green chili (optional)


  1. To make the Lahooh:
    • Mix pancake mix, salt, baking powder, water and black seeds in a bowl and stir until well combined.
    • Heat skillet and pour about ½ cup of the Lahooh mixture into the skillet. Heat until golden brown on the bottom.
    • Layer 3-4 Lahooh on a serving platter.
  2. To make the mint buttermilk:
    • Mix mint, cilantro, green onion, ¼ cup of buttermilk, green chili, garlic and spices in a food processor.
    • Put the mint mixture and the remaining buttermilk in a bowl and stir very well.
    • Pour the buttermilk mixture on the Lahooh.
    • Garnish with green onion.
